Nonprofits and Government
The Urban Institute Press has published a revised edition of Nonprofits and Government: Conflict and Collaboration, edited by Elizabeth T. Boris and Eugene Steuerle. This edition has new chapters on U.S. international nonprofits and state and local nonprofits.
Nonprofits after Hurricane Katrina
CNP is engaged in several projects to measure, track and provide information on the role of faith- and community-based organizations in rebuilding areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. CNP published an assessment report in early 2006 and assembled a comprehensive bibliography of research for a November 2006 conference organized by Urban Institute and the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
Arts and Culture
CNP has several reports on cultural participation, the financial health of the nonprofit sector and the value of artists and arts in communities. In February 2007, the Urban Institute sponsored a forum to discuss rebuilding the arts and culture community in New Orleans.
Nonprofits in Focus
This new series of reports provides unique insights and clarity on the dimensions of major areas of the U.S. nonprofit sector—human services, arts and culture, health, education, international development and assistance organizations, environment, and more.
Foundation Expenses and Compensation
This study considers the expense and compensation patterns of the nation's 10,000 largest independent, corporate, and community foundations (by giving). The interim report from the study focuses on the characteristics and operating styles that affect levels of expenses and compensation. The second report discusses the factors that tend to drive administrative and operating expenses. Dynamics, such as program strategies and characteristics, are key to understanding how much foundations spend.
Emerging Issues in Philanthropy
This roundtable discussion on emerging issues in philanthropy, held twice a year, explores policy issues affecting nonprofits and philanthropy from diverse perspectives in a freewheeling exchange. Summaries are released as policy briefs.
Effective Philanthropy
This study examined grantmakers' approaches to effectiveness and developed a typology of effectiveness models. The first report revealed differences among foundations and shows that grantmakers are not engaging in practices that are key to effectiveness. The second report discusses foundation leaders' understanding of effectiveness, their methods for judging it, and their views on how their foundations have changed (or need to change) to become more effective.
Nonprofits and Business
CNP is editing a volume on nonprofits and business as a companion to Nonprofits and Government. The book looks at how shifts in the boundaries between nonprofit and for-profit activities reflect nonprofits' innovation and adaptation to changing economic constraints and opportunities.
