Leadership Greater Washington, the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Urban Institute co-hosted an event to discuss the foreclosure crisis and its impact in the greater Washington D.C. region. As part of the event, the Urban Institute released its seventh in a series of annual reports, Housing in the Nation’s Capital. This year’s report focused on the foreclosure crisis and examined the level and trends of foreclosures and outlined potential secondary effects for families and neighborhoods. After a review of the findings from Housing in the Nation’s Capital by Kathy Pettit, Marian Siegel, executive director of Housing Counseling Services, Inc. and Idriys Abdullah, consumer protection advocate at the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, provided comments about the report and their views on the policy implications of the crisis. The afternoon featured a panel who discussed which policies were working and what more needed to be done to address the crisis in the Washington D.C. region. Speakers included Leila Finucane Edmonds, director of the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development, Elijah Johnson, director of Housing and Community Development in Prince William County, Craig Pascal, senior vice president and territory manager at PNC Bank, and Chad Williams, executive director for the Coalition for Homeownership Preservation in Prince George’s County. Rosie Allen Herring closed the event with a challenge to all attendees to keep working hard and building coalitions to help relieve the impact of the crisis.
